Malagò, on his first official outing in Tokyo after three days in conclave for the IOC Assembly, also announces that an awareness campaign on vaccination against Covid-19 is about to start, starring the winners of gold medals at the Games of Tokyo. «I got the idea in the wake of what other international committees did and I talked about it with the Minister of Health, Roberto Speranza. A campaign was born that will serve to sensitize, with the face of our blues, the Italians to get vaccinated. The more medalists we will have, the more commercials there will be for a just and sacrosanct cause ». There will be government television commercials that aim to increase the threshold of immunized people in our country, taking their cue from an event, like this Olympics, which is held despite Covid.
«There is a lot of suffering that accompanied the preparation of these Games. And there is a lot of them even now that they leave – continues Malagò speaking in the rooms of Casa Italia – After all, the alternative, that is not to make them, would have been even worse. These are the most important Olympics ever because they will save the ones to come. To blow up everything would have put many of our disciplines at risk that without the Games they could not go on. The wishes of the president of Coni are based on sensations but also on numbers: “We have to do better than Rio: in 2016 we won 8 gold medals, so the goal is 9 upwards”, Malagò says clearly. he admits: «We know very well that there are a thousand variables that can coincide in these situations and more than ever in the era of Covid. And then we have to insert the number 3 in the column of the overall medals, reaching the 28 podiums of five years ago. The gold medal that most of all I would like to win? I’m just saying that volleyball has been chasing it for 30 years. It is time to dispel this taboo ».
The visiting card of the Coni expedition is once again Casa Italia, despite its attendance being very limited by the restrictions for Covid: «This is tradition, hospitality, flavors and beauty. All things that are in our DNA as Italians », Malagò lets himself go. The structure is housed in “The Kihinkan-Takanawa Manor House”, an early 20th century Art Nouveau building located in the Minato district, about 10 kilometers from the Olympic Village. Here the blue athletes will eventually pass only if they exit the Games, as they cannot get out of the Five-circle “bubble”. It is also important to set it up to continue the precious partnership with important brands, as the president of Coni himself admits, and in the Milan-Cortina projection.
