ROME (ITALPRESS) – “Italian animal husbandry, increasingly performing and attentive to animal welfare, represents one of the cornerstones of the Italian agri-food and economy. Fresh milk is the food of life, our production systems are at the forefront and in able to reach very high standards, providing a healthy, safe and high quality product “. Thus Massimiliano Giansanti, president of Confagricoltura, on World Milk Day which is celebrated tomorrow, 1 June. The sector is worth approximately 16.5 billion euros in turnover and accounts for 11.5% of the total industrial turnover of the agri-food sector. “The sector, however, is going through a difficult economic phase determined by the increase in the cost of raw materials destined to feed livestock – says Giansanti – We have already proposed urgent interventions to support the liquidity of companies, but we also need the launch of a plan to increase domestic production of cereals and vegetable proteins “. The Italian milk production in 2020 was about 12.6 million tons, with an increase of 4.5% compared to the previous year, covering self-supply for about 90% of the national needs. About 80% of cow’s milk production in Italy is concentrated in the four regions (Lombardy 44%, Emilia-Romagna 16%, Veneto 10% and Piedmont 9%). Annual household spending on dairy products is around 20 billion euros. “However, we must point out that some media campaigns, which promote the dietary consumption of vegetable proteins to replace animal ones, are penalizing milk and the entire sector – underlines the president of Confagricoltura – We ask the institutions and the political world for support in countering certain guidelines, unhinging the prejudices that derive from them and the dangerous consequences to the detriment of the sector that has already had to deal with the effects of the pandemic and is penalized by low remuneration in the face of rising production costs “. “According to the Organization, greater national coordination, both within the supply chain and with institutions, would also be desirable; targeted promotional campaigns and research incentives on the use of milk components in the nutritional, pharmaceutical and cosmetic fields, to open new market outlets “.
