Inflation continues: in 2023, consumer prices in Germany rose by 5.9 percent. But not everything is becoming more expensive, according to an analysis by the comparison portal Idealo.
Compared to the last quarter of 2023, the prices of the 100 most popular product categories were increased by an average of 1.3 percent. Nevertheless, 42 of the categories have become cheaper.
You can currently save significantly, especially on technology and household appliances. Sneakers are also an average of 14 percent cheaper in January than at the end of 2023. According to the analysis, an e-bike costs almost 150 euros less.
Germany continues to have inflation under control: prices will also have risen significantly in many areas in 2023. Like that Federal Statistical Office announced on Tuesday that consumer prices rose by 5.9 percent last year. This is the second highest value since reunification. Whether at the supermarket checkout or in the restaurant – everything is becoming more expensive. At least that’s what you might think. But is that actually true?
An evaluation by the comparison portal Idealo*, which is available exclusively to Business Insider, now shows: That’s not true. Some products have even become significantly cheaper this year. From sneakers to vacuum cleaners, prices have fallen the most in these 15 product categories.

For the evaluation, Idealo examined the 100 currently most popular product categories. Compared to the last quarter of 2023, prices have increased by just over half. But at least 42 categories are currently cheaper than in previous months. Five categories remained at the same level. Overall, however, the price increase is relatively small. On average, prices across all product categories were only increased by 1.3 percent.
You can currently save a lot on some products. In addition to technical devices such as system cameras or televisions, this also includes running shoes and sneakers. You can save the most when buying a receiver – on average they are 24 percent cheaper than in previous months. Anyone who wants to stock up on cosmetics again soon can also be happy. With a 20 percent discount, facial care products are also among the products with the biggest savings

Admittedly, a discount of five percent doesn’t necessarily make savers’ hearts beat faster. As Idealo’s evaluation showed, that doesn’t mean anything. Depending on the type of product, single-digit percentages can result in savings of over 100 euros. The best example of this is the e-bike. According to Idealo’s figures, on average you can currently save just under 150 euros. With receivers you can even save over 200 euros.

As Idealo’s evaluation shows, you can currently save especially on technical devices. Some home appliances, including refrigerators and microwaves, are also more affordable in January than last quarter. The absolute savings are highest for receivers, e-bikes and system cameras, at an average of over 140 euros.
