According to insiders, the electric car manufacturer Tesla’s super factory in Texas, USA, seems to be ready to start producing the Model Y crossover.The facility may be tested in production next week as soon as possible, and will be officially put into production in the next few months. The source said that Tesla is expected to produce the first Model Y for testing as early as next week. This means that the car can operate normally but cannot drive on the street.
The production test version of Model Y can help train new workers to produce all-electric crossovers that meet road requirements at the Texas plant.
The source also said that Model Y, which “meets road driving requirements”, may start production in two months. In a few weeks, Tesla may officially start producing Model Y at the end of the third quarter or the beginning of the fourth quarter. These estimates are in line with the time frame given by Tesla CEO Elon Musk during a recent earnings call.
Musk said at the time: “The performance of the Texas team is really good, and so is the Berlin team. We expect that later this year, the newly designed Model Y will be produced in limited quantities at these two factories.”
The Model Y produced at the Texas plant will be slightly different from the SUV assembled at Tesla’s Fremont plant. For example, the Model Y of the Texas plant will use large castings, and Tesla also hopes to be equipped with new battery packs soon.
Musk explained in the second quarter 2021 earnings conference call: “The Model Y manufactured in Texas and Berlin uses one-piece casting for the front and rear bodies, while the Model Y manufactured in California uses only the one-piece rear body without Front body.”
He added: “Our goal also includes matching 4680 battery packs, which will help significantly reduce costs. In addition, we have back-up plans, such as continuing to use 2170 batteries. But in large-scale production, we obviously want to use 4680. Battery pack. From a physical point of view, this is the best architecture. From an economic point of view, this is the best way to reduce costs.”
After Model Y is put into production, Tesla also plans to start producing its electric pickup CyberTruck at the Texas plant. Model Y production will be Tesla’s main focus for the rest of the year. This quarter, Tesla announced that it will start delivering Model Y to European customers. The company also announced in its second quarter 2021 financial report that the Shanghai plant is now the main export center.
