Italy without honey: after empty hives, imports are now also collapsing

by admin

Italy risks running out of honey. 2021 is not only the black year of national production, with the collapse of 30% due to the crazy climate between drought, water bombs, hailstorms and freezing temperatures in the middle of spring. This year our country also risks running out of imported honey. According to Istat data analyzed by Fai, the Federation of Italian beekeepers of Confagricoltura, in the last three years the foreign honey passed through our customs has reduced from 27 to 22 million kilos, 20% less.

85% of the honey purchased by Italian commercial operators and packers is of European origin, but it is not certain – says Fai – that it was also produced in the countries declared of origin. Half of what we eat is honey that comes from Hungary, which is consolidated as our first trading partner, and which we pay 3.5 euros per kilo. Spain is our second European supplier, priced at 2.6 euros per kilo. Finally, the import of honey from China collapses, third in the ranking of exporters in Italy, which charges only 1.38 euros per kilogram of product. An increasingly complex picture, difficult to decipher and behind which the practice of nationalization of Chinese honey sold for Europeans could be hidden, informs the Federation of Italian beekeepers.
