The government designated by the Libyan parliament has offered Niger the possibility of accessing the port of Benghazi to support the country’s trade in the face of sanctions imposed by the Economic Community of West African States (Ecowas). By closing their borders at Niamey, the Community states have prevented Niger from accessing the sea through their territories.

Tobruk Foreign Minister Abdel-Hadi Al-Hwaij highlighted the potential of the Benghazi port for Libyan-Nigerian trade. Prime Minister Osama Hammad also invited Nigerien Prime Minister Ali Lamine Zeine to discuss the issue. A meeting between the two prime ministers, the Libya Observer information site reported yesterday, is in preparation.
