Lagos Environment Commissioner Tokunbo Wahab said the Nigerian state would “immediately” begin implementing a ban on the use of polystyrene and other single-use plastic materials.
According to Wahab, who made some statements to the press yesterday afternoon, non-biodegradable plastic represents “a serious pollution problem” and “clogs sewage drains” creating dangers and inconveniences for the citizens of the Nigerian megalopolis. According to Wahab, state officials will use a law, never enforced but dating back to 2009, to fine or jail offenders.
Lagos is one of the most populous cities in Africa. Nigeria generates 2.5 million tonnes of plastic waste per year. [Da Redazione InfoAfrica]
