Port of Livorno, Fincantieri and RTI will do the expansion

The major expansion project of the port of Livorno is underway. The Temporary Grouping of Companies made up of Società Italiana Dragaggi, agent, Fincantieri Infrastructure Opere Marittime, Sales and Fincosit, has signed a contract with the Port System Authority of the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea for the construction of the maritime defense works and dredging relating to the first phase of implementation of the Europe Platform. The contract has a total value of approximately 383 million euros, with a stake for Fincantieri close to 100 million. This was announced by Fincantieri.

The work of the port

The work – reads a note – will allow to double its commercial traffic at the port of Livorno, which will also be able to accommodate new generation container ships, with an impact also on the development of the city and of the Tuscany Region. The project will involve various local companies and workers. The works, which will start by the summer and will last approximately 4 and a half years, include executive design, construction of the construction site, war reclamation and preliminary investigations. We will then move on to the construction of a new external breakwater of 4.6 km and other internal ones for 2.3 km, through the supply and installation of approximately 5 million tons of material. The dredging will have a volume of approximately 16 million cubic meters and will cover both the areas affected by the new defense works and the deepening of the access channel bottoms and internal docks. The dredged sediments will be used for the construction of the new yards of the Darsena Europa and partly for the nourishment of the coasts between Marina di Pisa and Livorno.
