Potsdam (dts news agency) – In several cities across Germany, thousands of people took to the streets to demonstrate against the AfD and growing right-wing extremism. According to the organizers, 10,000 people took part in a rally in Potsdam. Among them were Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock (Greens).
Thousands of people also came together at the Brandenburg Gate on Sunday to take a stand against the shift to the right. According to organizers, around 8,000 people demonstrated in Kiel against the rise of the AfD. Numerous rallies have also been announced for Monday, for example in Leipzig and Frankfurt.
The reason is a report from the research center “Correctiv” according to which AfD politicians met with activists from the “Identitarian Movement”, which the Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution has classified as right-wing extremist, to discuss expulsion plans for people with a migration background.
Scholz had expressed concern several times in the past few days: “We will not allow anyone to distinguish the ‘we’ in our country based on whether someone has an immigration history or not,” Scholz wrote on Twitter on Thursday. “We protect everyone – regardless of origin, skin color or how uncomfortable someone is for fanatics with assimilation fantasies.”
Anyone who goes against the free democratic basic order is a case for the Office for the Protection of the Constitution and the judiciary, said the Chancellor. “The fact that we learn from history is not just lip service. Democrats must stand together.”
