Shanxi Province to Build 150 New Intelligent Coal Mines by 2024, Emphasizes Energy Transformation
The Shanxi Two Sessions on January 23 revealed plans for the construction of 150 new intelligent coal mines in the province by 2024, representing 83% of advanced coal production capacity. This announcement comes as part of the province’s efforts to emphasize energy transformation and development in the coming years.
During the second session of the 14th People’s Congress of Shanxi Province, Governor Jin Xiangjun delivered a government work report highlighting the province’s momentum in transformation and development. Despite acknowledging that coal will continue to play a dominant role in the province’s energy sector in the short term, Jin Xiangjun emphasized the importance of creating a window period for the development and growth of emerging industries.
The government work report outlined key initiatives for 2024, including the improvement of quality supply, acceleration of the pilot program for the comprehensive reform of the energy revolution, and efforts to build a new power system. In addition to the construction of 150 new intelligent coal mines and promoting green mining technology, Shanxi aims to increase reserves and production of unconventional natural gas, with an annual production target of 16 billion cubic meters.
Furthermore, Shanxi plans to speed up the construction of coal power projects, complete the “three-reform linkage” of coal power units, and actively develop new energy bases in the coal mining subsidence area in northern Shanxi. The province aims to increase the total installed capacity of material energy and electricity to 145 million kilowatts, with the proportion of new energy and clean energy installed capacity reaching 47%.
The announcement underscores Shanxi’s commitment to energy transformation and sustainable development, signaling a strategic shift towards cleaner and more advanced coal production.
