ROME (ITALPRESS) – Compared to March, in April 2021 Istat recorded a slight increase in employed persons and a more consistent growth in the unemployed, against a decrease in inactive. The growth in employment (+ 0.1%, equal to + 20 thousand units) involves women, temporary employees and minors under 35; On the other hand, men, permanent employees, the self-employed and the over 35s are decreasing. The employment rate rises to 56.9% (+0.1 points). The increase in the number of people looking for work (+ 3.4% compared to March, equal to + 88 thousand units) concerns both gender components and all age groups. The unemployment rate rises to 10.7% (+0.3 points), among young people it drops to 33.7% (-0.2 points). In April, compared to the previous month, the number of inactive 15-64 year-olds also decreased (-1%, equal to -138 thousand units) following the widespread decline in terms of both sex and age. The inactivity rate drops to 36.2% (-0.3 points). Comparing the quarter February-April 2021 with the previous one (November 2020-January 2021), the level of employment is 0.4% lower, with a decrease of 83 thousand units. During the quarter, the number of people looking for work increased (+ 4.8%, equal to + 120 thousand) compared to a decrease in inactive people between the ages of 15 and 64 (-0.6%, equal to -79 thousand units). The repeated economic downturns in employment, recorded from the beginning of the health emergency until January 2021, have led to a trend decline in employment (-0.8% equal to -177 thousand units). The decrease involves men, permanent employees, the self-employed and mainly 35-49 year olds. The employment rate drops by 0.1 percentage points in one year. Compared to April 2020, jobseekers are growing strongly (+ 48.3%, equal to + 870 thousand units), due to the exceptional drop in unemployment that characterized the beginning of the health emergency; on the other hand, inactive people between 15 and 64 years of age decreased (-6.3%, equal to -932 thousand), which in April 2020 had instead recorded a strong increase.
