Apple yesterday released iPadOS 16, the latest version of the iOS operating system designed for tablets. iPadOS 16 has many of the features coming to iOS 16, but it also has some iPad-specific updates.

One of the new features is an updated multitasking system called Stage Manager (pre-stage scheduling), but many iPad users never get the Stage Manager test because it only works with the M1 iPad. There are currently only three M1 iPads, the M1 version of the 11-inch iPad Pro, the M1 version of the 12.9-inch iPad Pro, and the M1 version of the iPad Air.

All other iPads with A-series chips simply don’t have access to the new Stage Manager feature, which is the biggest change in iPadOS 16 so far.

Also available on Mac, Stage Manager is a new multitasking experience. You can overlap and resize windows for the first time on iPad.The windows of the main app you’re working on are front and center, with other recently used apps on the left for quick access when you need to swap.

You can have overlapping windows of different sizes, similar to how on a Mac you can use drag and drop gestures to group applications together. Stage Manager supports up to four window groups, plus four additional windows if your iPad is connected to an external monitor. Stage Manager also enables full external display support on the iPad.

The 64GB fifth-generation M1 iPad Air is the most affordable iPad with front-of-desk scheduling at $599. The M1 iPad Pro models start at $799 for the 11-inch version and $1,099 for the 12.9-inch version, but we don’t recommend buying an iPad Pro at this time, as newer models are on the way.
