Li Mingxiao, Secretary of the Party Committee and Director of the Beijing Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission, said at a press conference held by the China Banking and Insurance Regulatory Commission on the 20th that the Beijing Banking and Insurance Regulatory Bureau guided banking institutions to continue to promote the in-depth integration of digital renminbi and the special scenes of the Winter Olympics, and has achieved medical care, transportation and travel. The seven major scenarios are fully covered, and the channels for the use of digital RMB are enriched through intelligent self-service machines, ski gloves, Winter Olympics badges, smart watches and other equipment.
Liu Jin, President of Bank of China, said at the press conference that Bank of China is solely responsible for the pilot service of digital RMB within the security red line of the Winter Olympics. During the Winter Olympics, Bank of China will provide two major digital RMB pilot services, “soft wallet” and “hard wallet”. . Customers can complete soft wallet opening, recharge, consumption, cancellation and other operations through their personal mobile phones. Hardware wallets will provide services in the form of physical wallets, and the corresponding physical Winter Olympics exclusive products such as cards and bracelets are named “ice core” and “snow ring” respectively.
Liu Jin said that at present, Bank of China has created more than 40,000 acceptance scenarios in Beijing and Zhangjiakou areas, fully covering diverse needs such as “food, housing, transportation, travel, shopping, and entertainment“. During the Winter Olympics, domestic and foreign customers can handle wallet services at Bank of China outlets, Winter Olympics contracted hotels, and Visa customer service centers in the Winter Olympics area, and experience convenient payment at merchants that accept digital RMB.
“The digital renminbi is actually not that complicated,” Liu Jin said. “When the Winter Olympics are over and we promote the digital renminbi in more consumption scenarios, everyone will see that on the one hand, the ‘soft wallet’ on our mobile phone is easy to open. The account, which is linked to the original bank account, is automatically transferred, and becomes digital RMB; on the other hand, we have various ‘hard wallets’, to give a simple example – a card that is the same as a credit card, but on There is a very small electronic display window that can display the balance, and the number in this window will automatically change and deduct for each purchase, which is very convenient to use.”
Liu Jin believes that this Winter Olympics will accumulate more valuable experience for pilot cities to further pilot digital RMB.
According to the central bank’s previous introduction, at present, the digital renminbi pilot has been launched in Shenzhen, Suzhou, Xiong’an, Chengdu, Shanghai, Hainan, Changsha, Xi’an, Qingdao, Dalian and other places and the scene of the 2022 Beijing Winter Olympics. As of December 31, 2021, there have been more than 8.0851 million digital RMB pilot scenarios, a total of 261 million personal wallets have been opened, and the transaction amount has reached 87.565 billion yuan.
