The Soaring Presence of Solar Panels in Residences: Government Incentives and Financial Support Boost Adoption

The rise of solar panels in residences has been bolstered by government tax incentives and the support of financial intermediation entities that provide resources. According to Edward Veras, director of the National Energy Commission (CNE), industries, including large facilities, are increasingly installing solar panels, with some falling within the small-scale category.

Users of the National Interconnected Electrical System (SENI) are turning to solar panels to reduce energy expenses and have a positive impact on the environment. Currently, there are 15,400 customers in the country utilizing energy from solar panels, although this number is relatively low compared to the total number of electricity customers.

The National Energy Plan 2022-2036 aims to increase the share of clean energy in the country, with various projects in the tourist area, such as Cap Cana, implementing panel and battery systems. The CNE approved 2,400 requests for tax exemptions for renewable projects in 2023, with the majority being for low-scale installations.

Private companies in the tourism, free zones, industrial parks, and financial sectors have also been investing in solar systems. The proliferation of solar panels is most evident in Greater Santo Domingo and Santiago, with homes producing their own energy and contributing to the renewable generation matrix.

Tax incentives, such as exemption from import taxes, have led to a significant increase in solar panel installations. However, despite the reduction in the cost of installation, solar systems are still considered expensive. The CNE will recommend expanding the list of equipment, parts, and systems eligible for incentives in its annual report to the National Congress.

Overall, the growth of solar panels in the Dominican Republic is a promising step towards a more sustainable energy future, with government support and tax incentives playing a crucial role in driving this transition.
