ā€œWhat is being sought in mineral extraction are asteroids rich in elements of the platinum group, along with base elements like silicon, magnesium, iron, aluminum, and titanium,ā€ explained Dolores Maravilla, a researcher at the UNAM Institute of Geophysics.

While the potential for asteroid mining is promising, there are still significant challenges to overcome. With over a million known asteroids, as recorded by NASA, companies like Astro Forge are working to address the issue of resource depletion on Earth.

Dr. Dolores Maravilla emphasized that space mining remains a challenging endeavor, requiring extensive exploration and logistical planning. The use of artificial intelligence and robotics for extraction and refinement, as well as establishing bases for human habitation in space, are among the proposed solutions to make asteroid mining a reality.
