Federal regulators are stepping up oversight of United Airlines after a series of recent incidents raised safety concerns. The company announced on Friday that the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) will be examining various aspects of United’s operations to ensure compliance with safety standards.
United’s Vice President of Corporate Safety, Sasha Johnson, stated that the FAA will be closely reviewing the airline’s work processes, manuals, and facilities in the coming weeks. Johnson expressed openness to feedback from the FAA and emphasized the company’s commitment to improving safety.
The FAA will be pausing certification activities for United but did not provide specific details on additional actions being taken. The agency mentioned that it routinely monitors airlines’ operations to ensure compliance with regulations and effective safety management.
FAA Administrator Mike Whitaker acknowledged the recent incidents involving United and stated that the agency will be looking for any patterns. He also confirmed speaking with United CEO Scott Kirby about the events.
Kirby, in an effort to calm customers, assured them that the recent problems were unrelated and outlined plans for additional pilot training and changes to the curriculum for newly hired mechanics. He emphasized that safety remains a top priority for the airline.
Recent incidents involving United Airlines include a piece of the plane’s outer skin falling off after landing, an engine fire during takeoff, and a tire loss during a flight. Other issues such as a hydraulic leak and a plane skidding off a taxiway have also contributed to safety concerns.
United Airlines, the country’s second-largest airline by revenue, is determined to address these safety issues and work closely with regulatory authorities to ensure the safety of its operations and passengers.
