Because of the corona pandemic and rising prices due to the war in Ukraine, the VAT for the catering industry was temporarily reduced to seven percent. The regulation expired in December 2023. The VAT was therefore raised again to 19 percent.
The industry is campaigning for a uniform taxation of seven percent. “It is absurd that 19 percent VAT applies to food in restaurants again, while food to go, ready-made salad from the supermarket and food delivery continue to be taxed at seven percent,” said Dehoga President Guido Zöllick. “This unequal treatment must finally be permanently eliminated.”
According to the study, another eleven percent of restaurateurs plan to increase prices by March, 6.2 percent during the course of the year, 4.1 percent do not know yet, 3.0 percent will not raise prices. “Whether, when and how restaurateurs increase prices depends in particular on cost developments, the concept of the business, the guests and the location,” says Zöllick.
In the survey, 33 percent also said they expected losses this year. Another 33 percent assume that they will be able to continue to stay on the market.
