Walmart Continues to Close Stores Across the US
In recent years, Walmart has been making the tough decision to close various locations across the country. In 2022, the retail giant ceased operations in a handful of branches, and in 2023, almost two dozen more locations met the same fate.
The decision to close these stores was based on the fact that they did not meet the company’s performance expectations. As a result, Walmart has announced that several more stores will be closing their doors in 2024.
One of the first stores to close this year was the Walmart Neighborhood Market at 2121 Imperial Ave. in San Diego. This closure took place on February 9, leaving residents of the Logan Heights neighborhood without their go-to shopping destination.
Another store that closed on the same date was located in El Cajon, California, at 605 Fletcher Pkwy. The closure of this busy store left many customers concerned about the impact it would have on the community.
In Columbus, Ohio, the Walmart store at 3579 S. High St. closed its doors definitively on February 16. Despite efforts to keep the pharmacy open for a few more weeks, the entire store ultimately shut down.
Other locations that have recently closed include stores in West Covina, California; Granite Bay, California; Towson, Maryland; and Milwaukee, Wisconsin. These closures have left employees with the option to transfer to another Walmart location or receive severance.
While Walmart continues to evaluate its growth and efficiency through store closures, the company is also increasing its presence by building or remodeling more than 150 stores over the next five years.
As Walmart navigates these changes, customers can expect to see the retail giant adapt to the ever-changing retail landscape.
