With the American chip manufacturer Nvidia, Swisscom wants to build strong supercomputers for artificial intelligence (AI) in Switzerland and Italy – so-called generative AI full-stack supercomputers. Nvidia is a rapidly growing computer chip manufacturer.
It’s about more data security and also new services for customers, said Swisscom boss Christoph Aeschlimann on the sidelines of the WEF in Davos. The two companies are building cloud infrastructure for artificial intelligence applications.
Millions of francs for AI
“For example, if a company builds a chatbot for customer service, it can now run and train it in Switzerland – this was not possible before,” the Swisscom boss explained. The data for this would be stored in Swisscom’s own data centers.

Swisscom wants to invest up to 100 million francs in the area of AI in the coming years. The expectations in this area are somewhat exaggerated. But: “AI is a trend that is here to stay,” says Aeschlimann. Swisscom uses AI in almost all areas.
Not a job killer
Aeschlimann does not see artificial intelligence as a job destroyer. Although jobs would be lost as a result, Swisscom employs over 1,000 people every year and can compensate for this. “We train employees in the new technologies so that they can use them and develop further.” New jobs would also be created through AI.
The technology offers great opportunities. Nevertheless: “The technology must be used responsibly; a certain degree of regulation makes sense.” You have to learn step by step to use AI sensibly.
