Mother and son
Turning to the great auteur cinema, one cannot forget the masterpiece of the Russian Aleksandr Sokurov from 1997. A film with a minimalist and essential narrative, with a boy at the center who looks after his mother who has now reached the end of her life. The deep bond that binds their lives is touching and moving, just as the incredible pictorial staging excites: echoes of Caspar David Friedrich are heard in this work in which each frame is perfectly composed.
All about my mother
Pedro Almodóvar is one of the greatest directors of contemporary cinema in painting maternal figures: he has done so in many important films (from “Carne tremula” to “Volver”, up to “Dolor y gloria”), but a special mention goes to this work of his from 1999, capable of growing vision after vision. A film that brings out all the poetics of the Spanish author, through an engaging narrative full of twists, accompanied by a style that is always consistent and recognizable.
Changeling
Clint Eastwood is inspired by a gruesome news story to tell the story of a mother whose son disappears into thin air. We are in Los Angeles in 1928: a few months later, to quickly resolve the case, the police return another child to the mother and, in the face of the woman’s protests, have her locked up in an asylum. A touching drama, beautifully packaged and with an excellent performance by Angelina Jolie as the protagonist.
Mother
Before becoming one of the best-known names on the world film scene with “Parasite”, South Korean Bong Joon-ho had already signed several important works. Among these there is certainly “Mother”, a judicial drama starring a woman willing to do anything to defend her son accused of murder. Framed by two unforgettable sequences, it is one of the most significant films of contemporary Korean cinema, centered on the theme of justice and emotional ties.
Mommy
In a ranking like this one cannot miss the beautiful film by Xavier Dolan, which tells of the tormented relationship between a single mother and her teenage son, a turbulent boy and victim of a severe deficit of hyperactivity and loss of attention. Dolan underlines this relationship by showing a claustrophobic (also thanks to the choices of the format) and symbolic world, full of interpretative keys. The soundtrack is remarkable, able to best represent the emotional state of the characters.
