by admin

The time has finally come for “A promising woman”: the last of the eight feature films nominated for the 2021 Oscar for best film to arrive in Italy, the debut of Emerald Fennell is the most anticipated title of the weekend in theaters.

The protagonist is Cassie, a thirty-year-old in appearance like many others, who works in a small bar. During her university years, however, the girl suffered a terrible trauma: her friend Nina was the victim of terrible violence and from that moment Cassie abandoned her studies and lives trying in every way to avenge her.

Taking up the sub-genre of female revenge-movies, Emerald Fennell has signed a curious and interesting product, even if too fluctuating in the narrative trend. If the first part has a good breath, as the minutes pass the film is less incisive than it should and ends up leaving some perplexity, especially about the conclusion. The screenplay, which won the Oscar for the best original script, works more for the construction of the characters, starting from the main one: a girl who tries to build her own identity through a series of personal vendettas, focused on more about humiliation than violence.

Excellent performance by Carey Mulligan

The greatest merit of this film, however, is certainly the excellent performance of Carey Mulligan, an English actress who deserved an Oscar nomination for her performance: the second of her career after that for “An Education” in 2010. year had shown her great moment of form with “The buried ship”, arrived on Netflix, with “A promising woman” the actress is confirmed as one of the best of her generation and among those best able to give life to roles of nature On its own (or almost) it manages to raise the fortunes of a product that is excessively forced and not credible enough to better support the many reflections proposed by the subject, written by Emerald Fennell herself, a directorial newcomer known above all for having interpreted the role by Camilla Shand in the last seasons of the “The Crown” series.

A Quiet Place 2

Among the novelties of the week at the cinema there is also «A Quiet Place 2», a follow-up to the successful and surprising film of 2018. After the events of the previous feature film, the protagonist family must once again fight for survival in a world where the noise is banned, under pain of being identified and slaughtered by alien creatures. This time they will step outside the confines of their home to try to find some other living human, but along the way they will realize that the dreaded monsters are not the only threat to stay away from. Directed again by John Krasinski, director and actor of the film, this sequel undoubtedly pays off the fact that by now the world staged and the idea behind the story are fully known and the overall charm can only diminish. Despite this, however, this second chapter is also a product able to involve in the right way, giving life to some well-chosen twist that makes the vision of good entertainment.
