After all, what is Biophilia?

The concept of biophilia strengthens our relationship with nature and its application in architecture aims to extract comfort and well-being from this connection.

The term originates from the Greek “bios” (life) and “philia” (love, affection or satisfaction), that is, it refers to “love for nature” or “love for living organisms”.

Biophilia was first used by Erich Fromm – German psychoanalyst, humanist philosopher and sociologist – in 1964.

Later, the term was popularized by the North American ecologist Edward O. Wilson, and then gained several scientific and even philosophical contours.

In all fields of study, biophilia is seen as an agent that improves the quality of life of human beings, increasing their mental and emotional well-being, in addition to offering a feeling of warmth.

One of the ways to avoid stress is to seek tranquility by being close to nature, so applying the concept of biophilia in architecture and interior design appears as a strong trend to improve our quality of life.

It is a contemporary architectural solution for the needs of people who desire an environment with more natural tones, breaking away from the urban ambiance and recognizing the ability of biophilia to create a comfortable environment.

Both internal and external environments enjoy the benefits of biophilic architecture in a direct, indirect or even symbolic way.

Leisure areas, for example, rely on colors, textures and nature itself in their space, with trees and gardens.

On the other hand, offices use ceramics in natural tones, as well as the colors of the walls, in addition to complementing the look with themed paintings.
