The Beijing Dance Academy has successfully showcased its original national standard dance drama “April in the World” during the preliminary audition at the dance theater of the academy. This unique production, which features romantic dance steps to interpret the legendary life of Lin Huiyin, has garnered praise from the audience.

“April in the World” skillfully combines modern dance, Latin dance, and other national standard dance styles to narrate the story of Lin Huiyin’s inspiring journey. The play begins with Lin Huiyin’s youthful days in Europe, exploring her love affairs with Xu Zhimo and Liang Sicheng, as well as her significant contributions to Chinese architecture and design projects.

The choice of using modern dance to embody Lin Huiyin’s character was a deliberate decision made by the director, Liang Qun. According to Liang, “The temperament of Latin dance is more Western and sexy, while Lin Huiyin’s is that of a delicate, yet bold Jiangnan woman. It was essential to convey her character through modern dance movements.”

Throughout the performance, the audience was captivated by the graceful and elegant ballroom dance sequences. Highlights include the emotional duets between Lin Huiyin and her lovers, as well as the vibrant group dance scenes depicting her vibrant social life.

Liang Qun’s innovative approach also involved using dance imagery to interpret the intricate details of Chinese architecture, such as the mortise and tenon structure. By blending elements of Tai Chi and Latin dance, the choreography beautifully encapsulated the essence of Lin Huiyin’s work and passions.

The actors, mostly students from the National Ballroom Dance Department of Beijing Dance Academy, faced a unique challenge in transitioning from competitive dance to theatrical performance. However, with dedication and guidance from Liang Qun, the actors were able to embody their characters on stage successfully.

After the successful preliminary audition, “April in the World” is set to be officially performed at the Tianqiao Art Center from May 9th to 11th. The fusion of Chinese and Western dance styles, along with the heartfelt portrayal of Lin Huiyin’s life, promises an unforgettable theatrical experience for the audience.
