The last few years have also been quite turbulent apart from Corona for the Welser ATHIRIA, who haven’t heard much about themselves since 2015 and the accompanying album “Vicious Circle”. Meanwhile, singer and figurehead Alex “Gatna” Petroczko is history, bassist Michi Steindl also left the band and drummer Michael Ledermüller was tragically lost in a tragic car accident. But the Death Metallers didn’t let it get them down and were suddenly back with a few gigs in Upper Austria and are now attacking with their third long player “Conjure The Beast”.
Ex-bass player Ossi and the new front woman Andy Schaf are now back on board, giving the band a subtle new look with their nasty growls. Otherwise everything is the same, because here there is straight, crisp death metal with a thrashy note and a nasty, dark undertone. In addition to sawing guitars and tight rhythms, the rattling vocals and also the subtly interspersed melodies stand out. Even if the approach is not that technically complicated, the colleagues from BELPHEGOR could have served as a source of inspiration here, as they also skilfully paint death and thrash in black. In addition to nasty and fast attacks and some pounding rhythms with doomy riffs, the focus is also on dynamics.
And so, even though ATHIRIA don’t deliver any innovation when it comes to Extreme Metal, “Conjure The Beast” is a well-rounded, beautifully mangy and motivated record that nicely shows that the band can’t be beaten down.
