Most people are familiar with the French band BLACKRAIN from their last two albums “Dying Breed” (2019) and “Untamed” from 2022. The fact that these two were already their sixth and seventh studio albums was also new to me. For “Hot Rock Time Machine” the band re-recorded ten songs that were already on their albums “Lethal Of Dose…” and “It Begins”. The reason for this is quickly explained. Both albums were never available in digital form, but the band wanted to make them available to their fans on various streaming platforms. The longer they looked for a solution, the more they realized that this would not work due to copyrights and contracts and that the only safe way would be to re-record the selected song.
And so five songs per album were selected and given a new look, and you can say that each song shows how the band has developed over the last ten years. I don’t know the old versions, but the new editions convinced me the first time through. Songs like “Overloaded”, “Baby Shot Me Down” and “Dead Boy” stick with you straight away. With “Nobody but You” the French manage to create a love song that is not too cheesy, but still exploits the full 80s potential. It wouldn’t have gotten any better in the golden era of glam metal from bands like POISON, BON JOVI and co. The absolute highlight is the song “Revolution”. This initially impresses with a western style and then with a catchy hook. As with “Untamed”, KISSIN’ DYNAMITE fronter Hannes Braun took care of the mixing and mastering and he once again did his job more than well for the band, who have been friends for years.
Certainly a highlight in the field of hard rock and glam metal that will not only convince the fans, but will also find its listeners among genre fans. I also believe, even though, as I said, I don’t know the old versions, that the ten songs have something new and surprising in store for die-hard fans of the band.
