Junction News, April 17, 2024

Everyone has a unique story about bridges, and now, the stage is set to showcase a fusion of various art forms that bring these stories to life. On the evening of April 16, as part of the Zijin Culture and Arts Festival’s small theater unit, the drama “Bridge Scenery” by Nanjing University of the Arts took center stage at the Nanjing Black Box Theater.

The play, featuring renowned crosstalk actor Chen Fengning, delves into the tale of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge through the eyes of the “Bridge Angel,” Chen Si. With authentic Nanjing dialect and engaging storytelling, the performance captivated the audience and brought the bridge’s history to life.

Chen Fengning, reflecting on his childhood memories of the bridge, shared, “When the bridge was completed, everyone rushed to take photos and develop them. I felt the majesty of the bridge.” His deep admiration for the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge inspired him to take on the role in “Bridge Scenery” with passion and emotion.

For young audiences who may not have the same connection to the bridge, the director and script coach, Chen Jie, aimed to create an immersive experience that combined drama, cross talk, talk show, and song and dance performances. The result was a captivating show that resonated with viewers across generations.

“Bridge Scenery” goes beyond a traditional play by incorporating documentary methods and featuring eight diverse characters with unique connections to the bridge. Through innovative storytelling techniques and multimedia elements, the production brings the bridge’s history and cultural significance to life.

Producer Xu Yaohua emphasized the bridge’s importance as a symbol of regional and cultural identity, stating, “The Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge is not just a physical structure but a spiritual and cultural symbol.” By exploring the bridge’s evolving significance, “Bridge Scenery” aims to inspire reflection and appreciation for this iconic landmark.

The interactive nature of the play, which blurs the lines between actors, images, and audiences, creates a dynamic and engaging experience for theatergoers. Additionally, a pop-up exhibition of bridge cultural relics at the theater entrance allows audiences to connect with the bridge’s past and uncover hidden stories.

“Bridge Scenery” offers a fresh perspective on the old bridge, inviting audiences to “grow” their own memories and deepen their appreciation for this iconic landmark. Through innovative storytelling and engaging performances, the play seeks to bridge the gap between past and present, connecting audiences of all ages to the rich history of the Nanjing Yangtze River Bridge.
