Chinese film Spring Festival box office breaks record, “Hot and Spicy” dominates

As the 2024 Chinese film Spring Festival schedule (February 10-February 17) comes to a close, the box office numbers have exceeded all expectations. According to data from the Beacon Professional Edition, the total box office has surpassed 4.5 billion yuan, with “Hot and Spicy”, “Flying Life 2”, and “Bear Infested – Reverse Time and Space” leading the pack.

The top four box office films have all received high ratings on Douban, an influential rating platform, with “Hot and Spicy” taking the lead. Directed and starring Jia Ling, the film has garnered over 1.5 billion yuan at the box office, with its heartwarming and inspirational story resonating with audiences. “Flying Life 2” directed by Han Han and starring Shen Teng follows closely behind with approximately 1.38 billion yuan.

The animated film “Bear Infested – Reverse Time and Space” has also performed exceptionally well, ranking third on the box office list with a box office of approximately 830 million yuan. Director Zhang Yimou’s “The Second Time” Ten Articles” rounds out the top four.

The overall strong reputation of the films released during the Spring Festival may further attract more viewers to the cinema, with several major films earning ratings of 7.9 or above on Douban. Furthermore, “Hot and Spicy” and “Article 20” have seen a prominent female audience, accounting for nearly 70% of viewers, while “Flying Life 2” has a significantly higher proportion of male viewers.

The success of the 2024 Chinese film Spring Festival lineup demonstrates the power of storytelling and the appeal of heartwarming and inspirational films to audiences. With record-breaking box office numbers, it’s clear that Chinese cinema continues to captivate and entertain audiences during the Spring Festival holiday.
