ROME – French carmaker Renault will produce at least 300,000 fewer vehicles this year due to the global shortage of semiconductors: a figure far higher than previous estimates given that in September it expected 220,000 fewer vehicles produced. According to sources revealed to Reuters, this figure could even reach 400,000 vehicles.
Chip shortages could cost the auto industry around 11 million vehicles this year, according to Reuters citing IHS Markit.
Returning to Renault, the French company announced last summer that electric vehicles will account for up to 90% of the brand’s sales by 2030, but the limited availability of components has forced car manufacturers around the world to reduce or even suspend the production.
This year, all European car manufacturers will have to abide by the directives that aim to limit the average levels of CO2 emissions in new vehicles to 95g per kilometer, under penalty of heavy penalties.
