Chivas finishes Forge FC and advances in CONCACAF, where it could meet with América

MEXICO CITY (AP) — With goals from Erick Gutiérrez and José Castillo, Chivas defeated Forge FC of the Canadian League 2-1 on Tuesday and qualified for the round of 16 of the CONCACAF Champions Cup with a combined score from 5-2.

Gutiérrez scored in the eighth minute and Castillo did the same in the 61st for Guadalajara, which awaits the winner of the series between Real Estelí of Nicaragua and América, Chivas’s staunch rival in Mexico. That duel will be settled on Wednesday in the country’s capital.

Chivas, which used several players who are substitutes in the Mexican tournament, did not have to speed up its pace to get its ticket to the next phase.

Castillo, a 22-year-old player who is in his first tournament with the “Rebaño Sagrado” is one of the players who received the opportunity to play against Forge FC.

Guadalajara, which along with América is the most popular in the country, seeks to win its first CONCACAF tournament since 2018, when it won the second championship in its history in the region.

Kevaughn Tavernier scored in the 93rd minute for Forge FC, who played for the second time in this tournament, where their best result is reaching the round of 16.

Chivas took the lead in a corner kick play in which Antonio Briseño hit a header that goalkeeper Christopher Kalongo could not stop and left the ball in his six-yard box where Gutiérrez appeared to push the ball into the back of the net. .

Guadalajara increased its advantage when Castillo entered the area from the left, took a shot that Kalongo rejected, but the rebound fell to the local player and he converted with a header.
