Jin Yong’s Martial Arts Novels Commemorated on His 100th Birth Anniversary
2024 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of renowned martial arts novelist Jin Yong. To commemorate this milestone, the Chinese Writers Association organized a symposium in Beijing on March 27th. Experts and scholars gathered to discuss Jin Yong’s lifelong pursuit of literary truth, his creative character, and his patriotism.
Jin Yong, whose real name was Louis Cha, created 15 martial arts novels that have become iconic in Chinese literature. From “Book of Swords and Enmities” in 1955 to “Yue Nu Sword” in 1970, his stories of iron-blooded loyalty, chivalrous bones, and happy grudges have captivated readers for decades.
Professor Mao Jian from East China Normal University praised Jin Yong’s martial arts world for expanding interpretations of justice and knight errant justice, providing a social significance that resonates with readers. As Huang Dehai, deputy editor of “Sinan Literature Selections,” recalled the joy he felt while reading Jin Yong’s novels, he emphasized how they enriched the imagination and understanding of the world for generations.
Science fiction writer Bao Shu noted the geographical richness in Jin Yong’s novels, especially the importance of boats in portraying a traditional Chinese map. Behind the best-selling quality products, Jin Yong’s meticulous polishing and commitment to improving his work set him apart from other authors.
Jin Yong once said that he hoped his martial arts novels would express his views on society and life, with a deeper philosophical meaning beyond entertainment. Experts appreciate Jin Yong’s artistic grasp of history, culture, and human emotions, making his works a reflection of the world and people’s hearts.
President of the Hong Kong Writers’ Association, Poon Yiu-ming, acknowledged Jin Yong’s portrayal of values beyond utilitarianism, reflecting the Chinese nation’s desire for freedom and justice. Director Zhang Jizhong highlighted how Jin Yong’s common people’s heroes resonated with audiences, embodying the spirit of serving the country and the people.
Chen Mo, vice president of the Chinese Martial Arts Literature Society, emphasized the national spirit, patriotism, and reflection on history found in Jin Yong’s novels. According to Professor Chen Pingyuan from Peking University, Jin Yong’s extensive knowledge and creative boundaries have elevated martial arts novels to a new level.
As the Chinese Writers Association head expressed, Jin Yong’s works showcase the vitality of Chinese culture and aesthetics, embodying a unique blend of traditional values and modern artistic conception. Looking back on Jin Yong’s legacy, readers and scholars celebrate his contribution to Chinese literature and his enduring impact on generations of readers.
