Author George RR Martin provides another update on the next A Song of Ice and Fire and the series as a whole. Writing on his Not A Blog blog, Martin writes that one of the most common questions he gets is whether his book series will end like an HBO show. Martin said that won’t happen.

When it comes to writing, Martin says, he’s like a gardener because his stories “grow, develop, and change” as he writes. He said he had a general idea of where the story was going and the big picture, but he was also constantly changing his mind and coming up with new ideas.
“I’ve been working in my winter garden. Things are growing…and changing, just like we gardeners. Things change, things change, new ideas come to me (thanks You, Inspiration), old ideas that don’t work, I write, I rewrite, I restructure, I rip and rewrite everything, I go through doors that go nowhere, and open miracles The door. Sounds crazy, I know,” he said. “But that’s how I write. Always. Always. For better or worse.”
Recently, Martin noticed that his story in “Wind of Winter” was taking him “farther and farther away from TV.” Some parts of what happened in the TV series Game of Thrones will also appear in Bitter Winter’s Wind, albeit “probably not in exactly the same way,” Martin hinted, but overall, the rest of Bitter Winter’s Wind Parts will be “much different” from the TV series.
“Really, when you think about it, it’s unavoidable. The novels are much bigger and more complex than the series. Some things that happen on HBO don’t happen in the books. And vice versa.”
Winds of Winter will feature never-before-seen characters including Victarion Greyjoy, Arianne Martell, Areo Hotah, Jon Connington and Aeron Damphair. “They’ll all have chapters, and what they do and say affects the story and the main characters in the show,” Martin said.
He added that he wrote a “legion” of secondary characters that were important to the plot of The Winds of Winter, including Mrs. Stonehart, Young Griff, The Tattered Prince, Penny, Brown Ben. Plum, Razor, Mage Marwyn, Darkstar and Jenny Westling.
The HBO show has strayed significantly from Martin’s writing. He noted that Euron Grey Joy was “very, very, very, very different” from the Euron in his book. Part of the reason Martin took so long to write The Winds of Winter was figuring out what to do with characters like Quays, Rickon Stark, and Jenny Poole.
In a larger development, Martin also clarified that not all characters who survived to the end of HBO’s Game of Thrones will be alive when Martin completes his A Song of Ice and Fire series. Likewise, not all characters who die on the HBO show will die in A Song of Ice and Fire, Martin said that while “maybe most” will actually die, not all: “Of course, next week I can change my mind again and write Next chapter. This is gardening after all.”
As for the overall ending, Martin said “some things will be the same. A lot won’t.” He expects it to be divisive.
“No doubt, once I’m done, there’s going to be a big debate about which version of the story is better. Some people will like my book, some people will prefer the TV show.
