The mayor of Surfside, Charles W. Burkett, reacted after the video was broadcast. In a letter addressed to the acting chief of police, Henry Doce, Burkett described the officer’s response to the Brazilian figure’s anguish as “totally unacceptable.”
Burkett stated, “This reaction does not reflect the values, judgment, and service that residents expect from their police,” emphasizing the importance of the institution interacting and serving residents with the respect and empathy they deserve. He added, “On the contrary, the primary job of our police department is to keep our residents safe.”
Interim Chief Henry Doce acknowledged the possibility that the situation could have been handled in a more understanding manner. He mentioned that more empathy should have been shown in the initial contact and that the incident serves as a learning opportunity.
