Netflix’s Newest Series “Griselda” Chronicles the Life of One of the Most Feared Female Drug Traffickers
Netflix has taken on a controversial but highly popular series with “Griselda,” starring Sofía Vergara, which follows the story of Griselda Blanco, one of the most notorious female drug traffickers in history. Blanco, known as “The Godmother of Cocaine” and “The Black Widow,” managed to instill fear in the hearts of many, including the infamous Pablo Escobar.
In this world dominated by women, Blanco made her name known through blood and fire, leaving a trail of fear and surprise in the wake of her actions. The series delves into her rise to power and the individuals she came into contact with.
One of these individuals is Amilcar, a character played by José Zúñiga. In the series, Amilcar is depicted as an influential drug trafficker in Miami with a wide network of contacts in the underworld and a territory for the sale of illicit substances. When Blanco arrives in Miami, she seeks to collaborate with Amilcar, recognizing the power and influence he holds in the criminal world.
In reality, Amilcar is based on Rafael León Rodríguez, a Venezuelan criminal who was considered the strong man in an important region of Miami before Blanco’s arrival. The series depicts a direct relationship between Blanco and Amilcar, but some versions claim that their peaks occurred at different times. However, the connection between the two is represented in the Mutiny Hotel, where infamous drug traffickers in the city met to conduct business.
Despite the suspicions and strong evidence against Amilcar, it wasn’t until an undercover photographer, Baruch Vega, testified against him, revealing the details of his crimes, that he was prosecuted and imprisoned.
While the series takes some creative liberties with the characters and their relationships, it provides an intriguing look into the lives of these infamous figures and their impact on the criminal world.
