When Luis Contreras arrived in Torno on Lake Como to see a land for sale that a guest of his in the St Barths resort had told him about, he immediately fell in love with it and bought it: perfect location on the shore, everything to think about from scratch. The challenge was to build something new, which did not yet exist, in one of the most exclusive destinations in the world. So in 2016 Il Sereno was born.
The “Lario style” is renewed
Between historic grand hotels and sumptuous villas transformed into five stars, there was a lack of a contemporary structure specially designed for today’s travelers. The architect Patricia Urquiola has designed an all-suite hotel, the most spacious category, with verandas overlooking the lake, and fluid environments with windows and terraces to enjoy the Lario and its green mountains from every angle, now in the Olympus of classic destinations of luxury. But, as in Portofino and on the Amalfi Coast, it is not just a question of landscape, but of lifestyle, and more precisely of vacation, favored by an upward competition of attention, temptations and novelties that, among vintage boats, beach clubs, à la page restaurants, is to the advantage of increasingly high local tourism.

The surprises of the Penthouse
At the Sereno they are completing the Penthouse Suite, a timely solution to the needs of distancing from the pandemic: it offers the services of the hotel, but is in a building next door, with a private lift. It is larger than the other rooms, 150 square meters of which 30 of terrace, has its own garden and a vertical one on the facade designed by Patrick Blanc, the inventor of green walls. The interiors are by Urquiola, with even more refined materials, Como silks and furnishings that can be bought. This year you can arrive by helicopter, thanks to the collaboration with Monacair, and find a bottle of Dom Pérignon in your room.
Champagne lake view
The maison’s champagnes also accompany a menu from the starred restaurant Berton al Lago, and are served at the Champagne corner on the terrace at sunset. Suggestions that in normal times attract guests from every corner of the planet. And why not an Italian sybarite? Tasting a drink made with the aromas of the garden or taking a motorboat ride are always worth a trip on our beautiful lake.
