Neither forgetting nor forgiveness. Exactly that was the content of the speech given today by the president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. “I do not forgive those who attack democracy, against the country and against their own people,” defended the Brazilian leader during an event held in the National Congressin memory of the attempted coup d’état of January 8, 2023.

“Impunity would be equivalent to providing a safe haven for new terrorist acts.”

Then he clarified: “To forgive would be to leave those responsible unpunished. And impunity would be equivalent to providing a safe conduit for new terrorist acts.”

The head of state recalled that this coup “could have been successful” and in that case, “democracy in our country would be destroyed, plunging Brazil into economic and social chaos.”

In his speech he emphasized that there is no perfect democracy, since it was set up by human beings, which they are not perfect either. “That is why it is necessary to build it every day, to perfect it.”

In that same scenario, the judge Alexandre de Moraes warned that “impunity does not represent peace or union.” The magistrate was one of the targets at whom Bolsonarism’s murder weapon was aimed, a year ago. As was recorded in chat conversations of the coup plotters, Moraes was destined to die “hanging in a public square.”

The judge was forceful, pointing out that all those who participated in the plan to break democracy “will be duly investigated, prosecuted and held accountable to the extent of their guilt.” The ceremony in which he delivered his words included the senior staff of Congress, the government and the judiciary.

“Hate, lies and coups never again”

The owner of the Supreme Court Luis Barroso During the event, he launched a sort of war cry. “Hate, lies and coups never again,” she emphasized. He added that the events of a year ago “were not isolated events or a mere accident. Today it is clear that he was meticulously prepared.” He concluded: “There is no more room for barracks or non-compliance with the rules of the game.”

Those who investigate the behind-the-scenes of this “sad episode”, that of January 8, affirm that the participation of the political heads of Bolsonarism is proven. They point out that support for the coup actions had to come, essentially, from the Armed Forces, with a “pacifying intervention.” But they forgot, or perhaps not, that other institutions could not be subjugated, among them, of course, Congress.

“They wanted to invalidate the election result”

From the first moment, the president of the Senate Rodrigo Pacheco (member of a center-right party) judged that “disqualifying and discrediting the electoral process, as was attempted, not only damages the republican institutions, but, even more, attacks the Brazilian people.”

Their conclusions contain nothing less than confirmation: the Bolsonaro supporters who acted on January 8 “wanted to invalidate the result of the elections” that took place in October 2022, “beyond the material damage, the depredations and the violence carried out.” For the senator, “that is unacceptable.”
