Singer Miley Cyrus commemorated the one-year anniversary of her hit song Flowers with a post on Instagram this Saturday. The 31-year-old artist accompanied the milestone with two black and white photographs. In the first, Cyrus appears holding a flower and in another she poses with it on her head, making an obvious reference to the theme.
In addition to the images, Miley shared a brief message about the track, expressing: “A year ago ‘Flowers’ started making people happy and that makes me happy, I love you, thank you very much.”
The song “Flowers” marked a milestone in Cyrus’ career by becoming the lead single from the album Endless Summer Vacation, which the singer described as a love letter to Los Angeles. In addition, the song spent eight weeks at number one on the Billboard charts in the United States and shot to the top of the Spotify charts. Likewise, it set a record on the streaming platform as the most listened to song in a single week, surpassing the previous record set by BTS’s Butter.
Much of the success of this piece is due to the message that Miley conveyed, reiterating that, despite how difficult a breakup can be, you can still move forward by learning to love yourself.
“I can buy myself flowers/Write my name in the sand/Talk to myself for hours/Say things you don’t understand/I can take you dancing/And I can hold my own hand/Yes, I can love myself better than you,” Cyrus sings in the chorus of this topic that millions of people have turned into an anthem of heartbreak.
Some fans interpreted “Flowers” as a reference to Cyrus’ previous relationship with her ex-husband, Liam Hemsworth. However, in an interview with British Vogue in June 2023, Cyrus downplayed these rumors saying, “I don’t need to be a master in the art of misleading the public. It will catch fire on its own.”
In the same interview, the singer revealed that the song originally had a very different tone, much more discouraging and “50’s style.” Furthermore, that message of empowerment that the public liked so much was completely lost.
The celebration of this anniversary comes amid the arrest of Alexander Karddalian, a 52-year-old man who has harassed Miley Cyrus since 2022. On this latest occasion, Karddalian was taken into custody after appearing in front of the singer’s house and actress with a stuffed animal in her hands. Months ago, Miley had placed a restraining order against Alexander, where she was required to stay at least 100 meters away from anywhere Cyrus was.
As mentioned above, Alexander’s obsessive behaviors began in 2022, and after being arrested, the man sent letters to Miley from San Quentin prison where he assured that he would visit her as soon as he was free. Thus, Karddalian appeared again at Cyrus’ house in August 2023, although the singer’s security team did not allow her to approach him.
