To find out where the inspiration for the band name comes from, you probably don’t need to hire a private detective, because it’s obvious that the PANTERA song must have been the inspiration here. Although MOUTH FOR WAR make very metallic hardcore, they have definitely copied a portion of groove from the legendary quartet.
Otherwise, from the very first second there is brutal and technically highly accomplished metallic hardcore around the ears and the breakwon at minute 1:50 of the opener “Roses In The Place Of Your Ashes” will turn every mosh pit into a battlefield and the riff monsters “The Plight Of Those Left Behind” and “Captivated” are reminiscent of the Swedish grandmasters MESHUGGAH because of their djent vibe, before the grooving hardcore takes over again in “No Grace”.
With “In Lieu Of Flowers” MOUTH FOR WAR gives the listeners a short break before things get back to the devilish side with “The Devil”. With “Under The Gun” you can almost see in your mind’s eye how things will go down in the audience – what a brutal performance. The record is then rounded off by the title track, which, despite the spoken word mid-tempo part, is just as brutally forward as the rest of the songs.
In addition to JESUS PIECE’s “…So Unkown” and YEAR OF THE KNIFE’s “No Love Lost”, MOUTH FOR WAR delivers probably the most compelling metallic hardcore record of 2023 with “Bleed Yourself”.
