“Battle Songs Of The Damned” is an explosive mix of punk rock and Irish folkReedo Records

MR IRISH BASTARD was founded in Münster in 2006, at the height of the popularity of FLOGGING MOLLY and DROPKICK MURPHYS. Since then, the band has released seven studio albums and even made it into the German charts twice. The band currently consists of nine members and delivers twelve brand new songs on their eighth album “Battle Songs Of The Damned”.

The band starts off in a humorous and good mood. A little disclaimer to the listeners: listening through it will definitely make you want to grab a few Guinnesses with your friends.

It starts with the lines “10 Green bottles of beer on the wall” and I think you can guess what happens next. It doesn’t take long before the drums come in and the overdrive guitars join in. “All My Friends Are Idiots.” After the first chorus, the first violin joins in for the transition into verse 2 and the momentum doesn’t let up1 “IDIOTS, Let’s get smashed again”… I warned you…

In the second song the violin starts immediately and plays the main melody. It tells about the unique experiences of a “Boston Wedding”, whiskey, fist fights, everything is there – instrumentally varied throughout the entire song.
“Wolfpack” continues to be more romantic than expected. Towards the end we also hear Harry Katey’s voice on the album for the first but not last time.

And yes, the band doesn’t shy away from addressing serious topics: “The Bar’s Out Of Beer”. In addition to the opening lyrics and vocal melodies, the tin whistle, the acoustic guitar and the drums clearly drive the song forward. Of course, one thing cannot be missing from this album and that is a hymn to the rough edges of the Irish. In “The Irishman” the tin whistle again plays a typical Irish folk melody and together with the drums they ensure that you can dance properly. After the second Guinness at the latest, no one will stay seated while listening to this song. Definitely a song that can’t be missing from the band’s live set.

With “The Parting Glass” and “I’m Not Long For This World” the band shows their calm and sentimental side. It becomes quieter and more comfortable swaying together. But towards the end it gets funny again and there’s a lot of banging on the strings and drums – and of course gang shouts like the football choir are also there – clearly in a song called “We’re All Irish On St. Patrick’s Day “. The same applies, of course, to “MC Gregor Irish Hooligan”. Downstroke overdrive guitars, banging drums and banjo, and violin melody and stirring vocals are everything your heart desires here.

Very cool Irish folk punk from Münster. The ladies and gentlemen play all the pieces your heart desires, whether tin flute, violin, banjo or accordion, we find it all on the album. I only miss one thing: Vienna on the band’s tour schedule!
