Bogota (AFP) Drummer Taylor Hawkins has died at the age of 50, members of the American rock group Foo Fighters said in a statement today. The news shocked the music world.

“The UFO family is devastated to learn of the tragic passing of our dear Hawkins,” the multi-Grammy-winning group said in a statement on Twitter.

“His musical spirit and infectious smile will always be with us all,” the statement added, without revealing the cause of Hawkins’ death.

The UFOs were expected to perform at the Estereo Picnic festival in Colombia’s capital Bogota today. Organisers issued a statement saying the show would not go ahead as usual.

The UFOs are one of the most influential and acclaimed alternative rock groups in the United States. Hawkins joined in 1997, playing drums on some of the band’s biggest hits, including Learn to Fly and Best of You. He also worked with Canadian singer Alanis Morissette. The music industry mourned in unison, with “heavy metal godfather” Ozzy Osbourne praising Hawkins as “a great man, a great musician”.

Punk rock singer Billy Idol, “Rage Against the Machine” guitarist Tom Morello, Canadian well-known rock group “Nickelback” and others Sad, can’t believe the news of Hawkins’ passing.
