National Television of Chile Takes Stand Against Narcoculture by Cancelling Featherweight Show at Viña del Mar Festival

The National Television of Chile (TVN) has asked for the cancellation of Mexican singer Featherweight’s show at the Viña del Mar International Festival. This request was made despite opposition to it due to their stance that a public channel like TVN cannot “transmit” songs related to “narcoculture.” The channel stated that as part of its public mission, it must promote democratic values ​​and human rights and therefore cannot share, transmit, or promote repertoires alluding to violence, drug trafficking, and other elements related to narcoculture. TVN expressed that it’s the duty of the entire society, as well as public and private institutions, to take necessary measures and deliver unequivocal signals, particularly in matters such as crime, organized crime, and drug trafficking. This announcement came after Chilean sociologist Alberto Mayol criticized Featherweight for “epicly praising the narco life” and questioned TVN for broadcasting the festival and the municipality of Viña del Mar for organizing it. Despite the call for suspension of the show, the festival organization confirmed that Featherweight’s show is scheduled to take place in March and stated that it “will not incur any type of censorship or discrimination.” Featherweight, who has gained international recognition, is known for performing songs that refer to drugs and recognized drug traffickers. The controversy is ongoing as the decision on whether the show will proceed remains a topic of debate and public concern.
