Peru Leads Latin America in Workforce Adoption of Artificial Intelligence

A recent study by the Latin American employment portal Bumeran titled “AI at work, how useful is it?” has revealed that Peru is the country in the region where artificial intelligence is most commonly utilized in the workplace. According to the study, 49% of Peruvian workers use AI for their daily tasks, with a staggering 98% of those individuals considering its incorporation into daily tasks to be useful.

The study, which surveyed almost 22 thousand participants, analyzed data from Peru, Argentina, Chile, Ecuador, and Panama to explore how the use of artificial intelligence is incorporated into daily tasks and particularly among human resources professionals. The results show that the majority of Peruvian workers who turn to AI do so to solve everyday problems, improve interaction with digital environments, create generative content, perform data analysis, or automate repetitive tasks.

In terms of frequency of use, 26% of respondents use AI daily, and 38% use it almost every day, highlighting the growing role of AI in the Peruvian workforce. However, the study also identifies several challenges and disadvantages associated with the use of AI at work, including concerns of job displacement and algorithmic biases.

Despite these challenges, a positive perception of AI at work is observed among Peruvian workers, with 85% believing its impact is positive. Additionally, 92% consider artificial intelligence to be an ally in their work and 94% plan to continue training in their area in the face of the advancement of this technology.

Dora Pinedo, head of Marketing at Bumeran Peru, emphasized the potential benefits of AI, stating that it can significantly improve efficiency and productivity in various work areas. Pinedo also highlighted that while companies are not yet widely searching for AI-related skills, specialized knowledge in areas such as robotics, AI applications, AI research, and algorithm auditing is becoming increasingly valued.

Regarding the broader impact of AI in the workforce, Wester Zela Moraya, dean of the Business and Systems Engineering program at UCSUR and AI specialist, noted that while AI has the potential to contribute to equal opportunities, it also has the potential to widen gaps, especially if models are trained with biased data.

The study demonstrates the significant role that AI is playing in the Peruvian workforce, and underscores the need for continued adaptation and training to embrace the opportunities presented by this rapidly evolving technology.
