Nyonya Malaysia in Amsterdam Center: fantastic Malaysian restaurant near the Nieuwmarkt

Nyonya Malaysia is located on the Kloveniersburgwal in the center of Amsterdam. A bit hidden and don’t be put off by the location, because this is anything but a tourist trap. As soon as you enter, it feels like you have left Amsterdam for a while and gone on a mini holiday to Malaysia! A small restaurant, a cheerful mural on the wall and in the back of the kitchen where delicious things are cooked.

All-out Malaysian with The Tarik and Roti Canai

There are a lot of delicious things on the menu. We are going all-out Malaysian and start with a Pulled tea: a hot milk tea. Traditionally this is often with Roti canai served. Actually for breakfast, but we don’t care about that: this is also super delicious to start your dinner with! Roti canai are Malaysian savory pancakes, sort of flakey and super delicious to dip in the curry sauce that comes with it.

Authentic Char Kway Teow at Nyonya Malaysia Amsterdam

Then we get our main courses. We eat fantastic food Char
Kway Teow
in Penang style. These are fried rice sticks that are stir-fried at a high temperature, giving them a slightly smoky taste, together with chicken, shrimp, fish cakes, bean sprouts and egg. Really delicious: I ate this same dish in Singapore a while ago at a food stall with a Bib Gourmand listing and I thought Nyonya Malaysia’s version was even better! We also eat Haianese Chicken Rice. This dish originally comes from the Hainan province in China, but is now a super popular dish in Malaysia and Singapore. The rice is cooked in chicken stock, which makes it delicious, the chicken really melted in our mouths, a beautifully balanced dish with subtle flavors!

The popular dish Laksa is also on the menu

Of course, you can’t go to a Malaysian restaurant and not order Laksa! Laksa is a type of curry soup that is extremely popular in Malaysia. Nyonya Malaysia’s version is deliciously filled, with nice thick noodles, shrimps, chicken, tofu and fish cakes. A creamy and soft broth and just like the other dishes, this dish is also great to share: just ask for two separate bowls.

Do you dare to try the Durian patties?

Finally, we eat the most exciting dessert we have had in a long time: a durian patty. Do you know durian? This spikey The fruit is extremely popular in Asia, and is known for its distinctive smell and taste. The taste is creamy, slightly reminiscent of mango, and don’t be put off by the strong smell! We were very curious how this would work out in a patty: really, really tasty. And certainly something you won’t see anywhere else on the map.

We had a very delicious meal at Nyonya Malaysia Amsterdam! Special dishes, authentic flavors and, in our opinion, a true hidden gem. Definitely going to try this!
