Sasha Montenegro, Mexican cinema star, dies at 78
Aleksandra Acimovic Popovic, better known as Sasha Montenegro, passed away on Wednesday at the age of 78. Her death was caused by a stroke related to lung cancer.
Montenegro was a prominent actress in Mexican cinema during the 1970s and also had a notable role in several television dramas.
Born in Bari, Italy on January 20, 1946, Montenegro’s parents were originally from Yugoslavia. After moving to Argentina with her family and the passing of her father, Montenegro began her studies while living in South America. It was at the age of 23 that she received a film offer and made her way to Mexico.
Throughout her career, Montenegro starred in various films, including those alongside wrestling legend El Santo, such as “Santo against Black Magic” and “Santo against the Assassins of Other Worlds”. She also appeared in the film “Las Glorias del Gran Púas”, based on the life of boxer Rubén ‘Púas’ Olivares.
Montenegro married former Mexican president José López Portillo in 1995, and they remained together until his death in 2004.
