Roberto Balzani elected president of the Liberation Museum

Roberto Balzani, professor of contemporary history at the University of Bologna and former mayor of Forlì is the new president of the Historical Museum of Liberation in Via Tasso in Rome. The Ministry of Culture has in fact proceeded with the renewal of the institution’s top management.

In addition to Balzani, the Board of Directors includes Giovanni Orsina, professor of Contemporary History at Luiss Guido Carli in Rome; the lawyer Antonella Di Castro, vice president and councilor for culture of the Jewish Community of Rome; Ester Capuzzo, professor of Contemporary History at Sapienza University of Rome; Gianni Oliva, historic former principal of the Massimo D’Azeglio classical high school in Turin and councilor for culture in the Piedmont regional council chaired by Mercedes Bresso.

«A few weeks after the expiry of the old governance, we proceeded to appoint a new president, in the authoritative figure of Professor Roberto Balzani, and the new Board of Directors made up of important scholars. I am now waiting for the Municipality of Rome to communicate its member. The controversies of a few days ago were truly surprising and instrumental, taking into account that in the past it took almost a year to make similar appointments without anyone saying a word. Good job to the new president and the new councilors, to whom the Ministry will provide all the necessary support so that the Liberation Museum can continue to be an important part of the nation’s history”, writes the Minister of Culture, Gennaro Sangiuliano, in a note.

Roberto Balzani (Forlì, 1961) is professor of contemporary history at the DiSCI of the University of Bologna. Graduated in 1985 in Florence, researcher at the IUE of Florence (1986-1989), he became a researcher at the Faculty of Political Sciences of the same city in 1992. From 2020 to 2023 he was part of the Scientific Committee of the Institute for the History of the Italian Risorgimento. Since 2023 he has been a resident corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Institute of Bologna.
