Samsung is once again the world‘s most important smartphone manufacturer. In the first quarter, the South Korean company had a market share of almost 21 percent with 60.1 million devices sold, as the US industry service International Data Corporation (IDC) announced on Monday. Apple came in second with a 17 percent market share and 50.1 million iPhones sold.

According to IDC, sales in the smartphone market increased for the third quarter in a row. At Apple, however, sales fell by 9.6 percent and Samsung was also able to sell almost one percent less. Chinese manufacturers in particular caught up: Xiaomi delivered 33 percent more devices and landed in third place with 40.8 million. Transsion even increased by 85 percent and secured fourth place with 28.5 million.

“While Apple took the top spot at the end of 2023, Samsung successfully asserted itself as the leading smartphone vendor in the first quarter,” said Ryan Reith of IDC. It can be assumed that the US and South Korean manufacturers will be able to maintain their outstanding position in the upper price segment, while the Chinese competitors are primarily relying on increasing sales figures.
