Shenzhen Collaborates with Top Opera Houses to Launch “Produced in Shenzhen” Brand

Shenzhen is making waves in the world of arts and culture as it partners with the Hamburg State Opera in Germany to bring the classic opera “Carmen” to the city. The world premiere of the Shenzhen version of “Carmen” was met with thunderous applause at the Shenzhen Poly Theater, showcasing the city’s commitment to producing high-quality and original artistic works.

The collaboration is a part of Shenzhen’s initiative to establish the “Produced in Shenzhen” literary and artistic brand, which aims to showcase the city’s vibrant and innovative cultural scene. The production of “Carmen” is a joint effort between the Propaganda Department of the Shenzhen Municipal Party Committee and the Shenzhen Municipal Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports Bureau. It is funded by the Shenzhen Publicity and Cultural Development Special Fund.

The creative and starring team of the play is nothing short of “luxury”. The production is directed by George Dennon, the director of the Hamburg State Opera in Germany, and Petra Deita, the opera director of La Scala in Milan, Italy. The cast includes renowned artists such as mezzo-soprano Ginger Costa-Jackson and opera tenor Norman Reinhardt, as well as talented Chinese performers.

“Through the Shenzhen version of Carmen, we will gradually produce a series of high-quality operas in Shenzhen. These operas are no longer just finished products imported from the world but unique Shenzhen versions created by local people,” said George Dennon, President of the Hamburg State Opera in Germany and Artistic Director of the Shenzhen version of “Carmen”.
