The Suzhou film “Paper Cavalry” broke out from a crowd of excellent films, and won the Golden Lotus Award for Best Screenplay in one fell swoop.
The competition for the best screenwriter award of this year’s film festival is very fierce. In addition to “Paper Cavalry”, the shortlisted films also include “Changjin Lake”, “Moving Her Seventy-Seven Times”, “Exclude Violence”, “Countryside”, and “The Wonder of the Old” . In the end, the jury unanimously assessed that “Paper Cavalry” written by Fan Xiaotian and Jiao Huan and “Hometown” written by Guo Zisheng won the award.
The movie “Paper Cavalry” is a literary and artistic film rooted in Suzhou. The script is adapted from the short stories “Cavalry” and “Paper” by Suzhou writer Su Tong. The film tells a story: Zuo Lin, the “Round Leg”, and the rich second generation Qing Qing meet. Zuo Lin, regardless of the worldly vision, wants to become his inner “cavalry soldier”. Qing Qing is moved by Zuo Lin’s persistent pursuit of dreams, and the two interact with each other. Attracted, and parted ways, to their respective endings. Typical elements representing Soviet culture and Soviet architecture, such as Wu language, Kunqu opera, Tongdli alleys, and Eastern Gate, appeared in the film one by one, forming a complete set of Soviet-style film language.

The story and interpretation of the Suzhou writer’s delicate brushstrokes are worthy of being made into a film with southern characteristics, “Paper Cavalry.” It’s just such an attempt.” Director Fan Xiaotian said, “Paper Cavalry” was born in the south of the Yangtze River, burned in light and shadow, presenting the region and transcending the region. It is now blooming on the larger stage of the Macau International Film Festival, which is another proof that Jiangnan culture shines on the international stage.
After winning the “Golden Lotus”, Fan Xiaotian said that as a “new force” in the film industry, he and his team will continue to work hard to create more and better Jiangnan-themed film and television works.
