Syracuse, German plane from World War II found at sea

It would be the wreck of a Junker Ju-88 twin-engine multirole bomber, identified by a diver

PALERMO – A German Junker Ju-88 aircraft was found by the Superintendence of the Sea of ā€‹ā€‹the Sicilian Region, following a diving report, about 1.5 miles from the coast in the waters of Ognina-Syracuse.

The aircraft, which is very fragmented, shows several parts of aluminum scattered over a large area, a sign of a violent impact or an explosion in flight. Among the elements found, a Junker Jumo 211 aircraft engine and an aluminum hatch with a circular glass inspection window in the engine compartment, a characteristic of a single Junker model.

These elements identify with reasonable certainty the wreck of a Junker Ju-88 twin-engine multirole bomber. The wreck was identified by Fabio Portella, owner of the Diving “Capo Murro” in Syracuse.
