The 2024 Cannes International Film Festival has announced the shortlisted films for this year’s event, and four Chinese-language films have made the list.

Among the selected films are Jia Zhangke’s “The Romantic Generation,” Guan Hu’s “Dog Formation,” Chen Kexin’s “Jiangyuan Lane,” and Cheng Baorui’s “The Siege of Kowloon Walled City.”

“The Romantic Generation” follows the story of a Chinese woman navigating life amidst social changes from 2001 to 2022. Director Jia Zhangke employed a mix of fiction and documentary techniques in the film, which took approximately 22 years to produce.

“Dogs,” directed by Guan Hu, stars Peng Yuyan, Tong Liya, Jia Zhangke, and Zhang Yi, and revolves around a man’s unique bond with a stray dog.

Chen Kexin’s “Jiangyuan Lane,” featuring a star-studded cast including Zhang Ziyi, Lei Jiayin, Zhao Liying, Wang Chuanjun, and Yang Mi, is based on a real husband-murder case from the Republic of China era.

These Chinese-language films showcase a diverse range of stories and talents, representing the rich tapestry of cinema from China on the international stage. The Cannes International Film Festival is set to be a celebration of global filmmaking excellence, with these films standing out among the impressive lineup.
