The band, which was only founded in London in 2020, has caused a sensation in hardcore and punk circles in recent years, especially with the release of their debut album “Retaliation”. The pre-released crisp singles such as “Cry Eyes Your Out” caused anticipation and expectations for THE CHISEL’s second full-length, which is now being released via Pure Noise Records, to reach dizzying heights.
At the moment, as is already evident from the reviews here, the street is celebrating like Oi! Punk is currently experiencing a real revival, and THE CHISEL also features a certain British original named Charlie “Chubby Charles” Manning-Walker. Who, as his nickname suggests, not only leads the furious punk rockers CHUBBY AND THE GANG as a singer, but also helped with the Oi! on the CONSERVATIVE MILITARY IMAGE European tour! Hardcore whiz kids on the guitar.
The new album then opens with the eponymous intro, but after that it doesn’t take much longer and the first punk rock hit “No Gimmick” is unleashed on the listeners, and after almost 90 seconds it is clear that THE CHISEL more than exceeds all expectations have fulfilled. And so it goes in quick succession, the already known “Cry Your Eyes Out” is a merciless catchy tune, which is followed by the next hits with “Living For Myself” and “Fuck Em”.
THE CHISEL are audibly influenced by 80s punk and legendary groups such as ANGELIC UPSTARTS, THE PARTISANS, THE 4 SKINS or COCKNEY REJECTS, but are also able to create their own independent and recognizable sound through powerful hardcore punk. The sophisticated songwriting of the 15 consistently excellent songs, which rarely last longer than two minutes, but are still bursting with melodies, hooks and ideas, does the rest here. With his snotty, angry voice on tracks like “Bloodsucker”, “Cuts Like A Knife” or the lightning-fast “Tomorrow”, singer Cal Graham adds a good deal of aggression despite all the catchiness and singalongs and skilfully rounds off this great record.
There is definitely no getting past “What A Fucking Nightmare” for punks, skins and probably also hardcore heads and THE CHISEL are already delivering a hot contender for an album of the year 2024 at the beginning of the year.
